Three Color Rule

    12.6.11a
    12.6.11b
    12.6.11c
    {Blouse, Similar Sweater, Similar Coat, Similar Jeans}

    When I was a little girl, I basically was given hand me downs every year. Which was fine by me because I'd see my sister wear something and I couldn't wait to get my little hands on it. As I was in Target yesterday I saw a mom hold up a graphic tee to her 2 year old and ask her if she'd wear that with her jeggings. The 2 year old obviously didn't care but I thought it was cute so I relayed this story to my mother in disbelief that a mom would consult her 24 month old on what she would wear.

    "Well I had to give you the 3-color rule when you wear that age."
    "What? You gave me rules? I didn't need rules."
    "You would put all of these crazy colors together and I'd say 'baby, pick your three favorite colors and just wear those.' And it would work every time."

    So I used that rule today. I picked my favorite three colors and went with it. I don't know if this is on Nina Garcia's style rules, but it worked for me. Thanks, mom.

Wearing the Pants

    Lately, I can't get enough of pants. Which is weird because if you look through my archives, you can see my slight obsession with skirts and dresses over the last two years. You see, after I hit the corporate world right after college, I didn't know a) how to dress my body and b) what to wear to the offic. One time someone told me I looked good in pants, so I stuck with it. So the sick cycle began: Corporate wear = pants from the Limited with generic top, then add cardigan. When I started styling blogging, wearing a skirt was pure freedom. I felt like a rebel every time I showed up in a cute skirt. And colored tights was the quiet equivalent of me re-enacting the 'Freedom' scene from Braveheart in the middle of the office. So it's a little surprising to me that my return to pants was so sudden, but I just can't enough. See you again in two years, skirts. (I kid. I don't like pants that much.)

    PS -- Yes, my glasses are from BonLook! The style isn't available anymore but these are similar.

    I have been on the lookout for an obnoixously yellow sweater. And you know what? Obnoxious yellow is kind of hard to find. Especially when you ask a sales girl -- "what's the most obnoixous sweater you have?" They don't take that very well.

    And then, just as I was about to give up, I found it. A perfectly lemon colored sweater. When life gives you lemons...make an outfit. That's how the saying goes; I'm 84% sure that's right.

Almost Autumn

    I wore this last Friday before I knew it was going to be 85 degrees. I didn't realize it was this hot until I walked out at 5 pm from the shop and immediately regretted the heavy scarf. Mainly because I saw people in shorts point and stare at me from afar. I realize it still feels like summer, but it's October. I'm going to look October, even if I'm sweaty while doing it.

    Do you ever have those days that you feel like you waste a great outfit? Today was one of those days. Not that it was a bad day, it just that I think I saw a total of 20 human beings today (five dogs, but they don't count mainly because dogs are color blind). Thank goodness for you guys. Or else I'd still be out trying to find more people to see my outfit. And let me tell you, starting a conversation with 'don't you love my outfit?' shuts down the conversation pretty quickly. Which is why I don't go out alone. Social skills were never my forte.

    It hit me last night as I was watching 'Storage Wars' and playing a crossword, that fashion week is happening a million miles away. And for a second I thought I was in the wrong place. I should most certainly be in a pretty dress in NYC, drooling over runway style and stalking Anna Wintour. Right?

    And then this post happened. Instead of an 'arm party' I've got an old hair tie on my wrist for when my hair inevitably decides to turn against me. Then as I was labeling my outfit, I had to google Calvin Klein's name to make sure I spelled it right. (I didn't.) Perhaps on my couch playing crosswords is right where I'm meant to be.

    As you can see, in honor of the missed Missoni event at Target (Missedoni?) I wore my thrifted knock off sweater vest version of Missoni. Thrifted and a knock off? Oh girl you are too much.

Maxi Dresses, Tapas, and Prom

    I know what you are thinking. 'Well, this is dressy for a Wednesday.' But really I wore this out last night to a goodbye dinner with two of our favorite friends. We'd never been to the restaurant before but the name was obscure and modern so I made the call that it was a classy place and I needed to dress up. (I was right -- tapas + wine. FANCY.) And of course when I think 'nice restaurant attire' that equals a maxi dress and heels. That's about as fancy as I get around here, people. However, as I was packing the other night I did find my old prom dresses. And apparently going to prom in my high school was like going to the Oscars. I'm not quite sure why I've held on to them though. Guess I'm still waiting to be invited to the senior prom after all these years.

Thrifted

    {Shop: Heels, Belt, Bracelet, Earrings (c/o Coquese)}

    My friend Jentine is hosting a special Everybody, Everywear this week on thrifted items. Which is perfect timing since my dress and my necklace are both thrifted items. And since I'm going to use the word 'thrift' about 30 times during this post, I'll go ahead and give a definition:

    thrift (v.): buying second-hand, or previously loved items from a thrift or second-hand store or perhaps a garage sale. Also, I completely made this definition up. Who knows if it's right?

    I asked Jentine if I could wear something I got from Gap that was ridiculously cheap. She said only if I donated it to Goodwill, then went in a purchased it again. After much thought and debate, I decide that was too much effort. So instead I went for this dress. Technically this wouldn't have been anything I would have ever picked up in a retail store. But in a thrift store, all my inhibitions are out the door. Plus I saw Rachel Zoe wear a maxi with sleeves so I was automatically drawn to this dress when I saw it. But there were a few issues. For starters, this dress is about 5x too big for me. Another issue was that it's completely sheer. Then there is a pretty big hole in the seam of the arm on one sleeve. And lastly it was marked at $12, which in Thriftland is quite pricey, especially for a non-designer item. So I went through my mental checklist: can I belt this dress to make it fit? Yes. Do I have a slip that will work as a dress underneath to cover my ladyparts? Yes. Is the hole in the arm fixable? Yes. And then... I sniffed it. It passed the sniff test -- the most important test of all.

    Then, as if I wasn't already convinced to purchase, I saw a sign from above: All women's clothing 50% off. $6? Done deal. Now all I need is a baby with sunnies to be just like Rachel -- which are super hard to come by in thrift stores, by the way.

I Did NOT Wear This Today.

    5.12.11d

    Just so we're clear, I didn't wear this today. This outfit is actually from last Thursday. (You know the day the world ended. AKA the day blogger didn't work.) I'm gonna be honest, I put about zero effort into getting dressed today, so I'm glad I had this outfit to blog. I guess you'll never know if I had a good hair day today or not. Never. How you will sleep tonight not knowing is beyond me.

    I got these shoes at Nordstrom Rack for $22 or something ridiculous like that. Even the sales guy was proud of me. It's hard to find Calvin Klein purple suede heels in size 10 for less than $25 but I did it. But you know, I got to thinking about it and these shoes were snubbed by many shoppers if they landed in my hands for so cheap. Either I know something they don't, or I just really like clown shoes. Suede clown shoes, mind you. I have standards.

    First off, thank you for your kind, kind words and support on the post below. In fact, consider this whole post a thank you card.  I was a bit nervous to put myself out there on the ol' internets. Yeah, sure I post my outfits but you didn't really think that I wore these get-ups everyday did you? It's all lies, I tell you. Lies. I don't even have brown hair. This is a wig.

    All kidding aside, sincerely thank you. It's not always easy being honest/having so many darn feelings on the internet. (I've laughed/cried/cried twice while writing this post.) If I knew you guys liked honesty and feelings so much, I'd cut the comedy act and cut straight to the emotions.

    Oh yeah, things are about to get raw.

    *This outfit also needs to say "Happy Mother's Day" to my mom. Sorry about the late card that I swear is in the mail.

    I cleaned out my closet this week and remembered that I had forgotten about this skirt. This was my proudest purchase to date from Anthropologie -- it cost me $10. And $10 at Anthro is like $100 at Target, so you can understand my excitement.  I kind of feel like I ended up making money off the deal, somehow. Let me do my math and get back to you on that, but I'm pretty sure that me buying this skirt was Anthro's loss.

    I've been in a full skirt mode lately. Not that I've lost my love for pencil skirts, but I just love the look of a-line skirts this spring. Plus I kind of feel like a lady. I type this as I'm sitting slouched in my chair, legs definitely not crossed, both elbows on the desk.

    I'm a swine with pearls on, or in this case a really pretty skirt.
